Why The Basic Program?
I have had a lot of demand for building a Training Program that would be more convenient for some of my athletes. I have now developed a TTP Basic Program available to all of the riders for a few reasons:
1 – Despite work ethic, some athletes just don’t have the time to train 10-12 sessions a week. With early school days, day jobs, or other sports involvement, they wouldn’t be able to keep up with the Advanced Program. The Basic Program is built with a 6 day split, including track time – making it easier for those with a heavy schedule.
2 – Cost. The Advanced Program requires the athlete to purchase a list of training equipment. Without knowing if the kid is fully committed, it involves a financial risk that not every parent is willing to take. The Basic Program does not require to purchase any of the training equipment. All you need is an athlete, a goal, and a bike. This allows every parent of young athletes an opportunity to test it out. If the athlete responds well to the program, they can always upgrade to the Advanced Program at any time 🙂
3 – Work ethic is a skill that sometimes needs to be developed. In my coaching career, I have seen many examples of athletes that are doing well in the sport of BMX Racing but had to take some time to adapt to the consistency of a structured Training Program. The Basic Training Program provide a good introduction for the future serious athlete.
Should I Sign up with the Basic or the Advanced Program?
It all depends on what you are trying to do and how important BMX is to you. If you ride BMX as a hobby, or if you are involved with other sports, the training sessions of the Advanced Programs will most likely collide with the other sports’ commitments that you have. For that reason, I would recommend the Basic program. On the other hand, if BMX is your #1 sport and every night you dream of becoming a gold medalist at the Olympics, I would say go with the Advanced Program and get to work…
Is the Basic Program worth it?
Absolutely…
The most important part of a good training program is the structure that it provides. BMX racing is an extremely demanding sport. For a full 30-40 sec sprint, an athlete must develop a large amount of skill set with an extreme physique.
As an example:
-
Rider must develop high riding skills to be able to go over the jumps at high speed
-
Athlete must have incredible strength / weight ratio to increase acceleration out of the gate
-
Athlete must take care of the plyometric work to transform strength into explosive strength
-
Athlete must be able to transfer explosive strength and fully apply it on a bike
-
Athlete must develop high stamina to be able to deliver 100% power for a full 30-40 second race
Without a structured training program, one would not be able to take care of all of those areas by just going to the track and doing sprints in front of their house.
Also, many athletes make the mistake of over-training or not training hard enough. As a result, the athlete shows up to their big event either not fully prepared or fatigued by over-training.
With the Basic Training Program, I made sure that all areas motioned above are taken care of. Even with the 6 day split, the training sessions will be well balanced and will follow a correct training structure allowing one to progress at their fullest.
If you are enrolled in the Advanced Program, but are fighting the training schedule, skipping sessions, etc… do yourself a favor and enroll into the Basic Program. You will get more out of it, simply because you will be following a correct training structure. That structure will ensure that you will have developed all of the physical qualities that are crucially important for the sport of BMX racing. By default, you will be ready to ride at your full potential on the day of your big race.
Best of luck to you
